Digital media are constantly changing the way we communicate, access knowledge and learn. As educational and research institutions, museums are responsible for shaping the manifold ways of how to gain access to their collections, for disseminating their research and for opening up pathways to participate in our shared cultural heritage. The aim of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen is to manage, preserve, catalogue and transmit to the public its large collection of tens of thousands of objects. This digital strategy will provide guidance for the future digital evolution of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, both for the general public and for museum staff. In so doing, the project takes into account the challenges that digitisation poses for museum employees in their everyday work environments. The Digital Strategy is part of the mission statement of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, which expressly states that “Originale Erleben” (experiencing originals) and digital worlds do by no means contradict each other: strategic measures thus enable the conscious and conscientious use of the expanding potential offered to us in the digital age, while also directing us towards the original artworks in the collection.
