DIGITAL

STRATEGY

Explore the digital strategy of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and learn more about our motives, vision, and objectives.

WhyEXPERIENCE ORIGINALS

Digital media are constantly changing the way we communicate, access knowledge and learn. As educational and research institutions, museums are responsible for shaping the manifold ways of how to gain access to their collections, for disseminating their research and for opening up pathways to participate in our shared cultural heritage. The aim of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen is to manage, preserve, catalogue and transmit to the public its large collection of tens of thousands of objects. This digital strategy will provide guidance for the future digital evolution of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, both for the general public and for museum staff. In so doing, the project takes into account the challenges that digitisation poses for museum employees in their everyday work environments. The Digital Strategy is part of the mission statement of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, which expressly states that “Originale Erleben” (experiencing originals) and digital worlds do by no means contradict each other: strategic measures thus enable the conscious and conscientious use of the expanding potential offered to us in the digital age, while also directing us towards the original artworks in the collection.

HowGuiding principles

A total of eight guiding principles outline the foundations of our digital strategy. They form the basis of our actions in the digital age. How can we premeditate and enrich the experiences of our visitors with digital means? How can we facilitate access to resources, data and research findings? How do we deal with an increasingly digital working environment?

WHATGoals

Much has happened since the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen introduced software for the digital management of its museum collections in 2003 and launched a network with a total of 80 desktop PCs. Our goals describe the concrete steps that we have taken and still intend to take on the path leading towards the digital age.

WhoWORKING GROUP

Digitisation concerns all of the museum’s spheres of activity. For this reason, employees from various departments established the Digital Strategy Working Group in 2018. In workshops, jour fixes and discussions, they have jointly developed our digital strategy. Its launch represents an intermediate step along the way.
